After checking out the wares at the Honda and Acura press introductions we sauntered around the Los Angeles Convention Center and checked out what was going on with the rest of the Asian and Big Three automakers. There were some pleasant surprises and just a few horror stories. They are as follows. Hyundai/Kia Along with the upcoming 2012 Ford Focus, I think that the Elantra is going to really light a fire under the standard bearers in the compact sedan segment. The Elantra is pert, fluid and oddly muscular in appearance and will never be mistaken for being anything else but a Hyundai. This company has really developed its own design language and the Elantra is the finest embodiment of their new styling ethos. The 2011 Hyundai Elantra has “huge hit” written all over it. Kudos to Hyundai. We can’t wait to drive one. Over at Kia they were showing off their own newfound stylishness with an assortment of Sportages and Optima family sedans. We are currently testing an Optima and let me just say that it is a revelation. Also on hand was the new Forte 5-door hatchback which I think looks even better than the four door variant or even the Koup. Nissan Like that wacky unpredictable uncle who always makes the holiday season much more interesting, Nissan is the only car company that refuses to follow a decipherable pattern. We say that’s a good thing even if it does result in the odd Murano CrossCabriolet disaster. The Juke continues to stand as the most daring SUV design on sale today and even though we think owning an electric car still has too many limitations the Leaf is as adorable as a squishy stuffed animal. The new Quest made its debut and its angular and stern stance reminded me of a firm headmistress at a Catholic School. The new Odyssey and Sienna may have renewed competition. Toyota Toyota showed off a new RAV4 EV electric variant with technology gained from their joint venture with Tesla. They also showed off the 2011 Corolla and well….sorry we just dozed off there for a second. Unless you own a Corolla you probably won’t notice the changes. Mazda Mazda showed off a new concept car that may signal a new design language for the company. Mazda also showed off the new Mazda5 which marks the last use of their short lived Nagare design language. Good call Mazda. Mitsubishi Mitsubishi showed off its new all i-MiEV electric car which looks like an inflated, angry Pokemon monster.
